Upbeat At CEDIA In A Down Market
It's that time of year again -- time for the annual influx of high-end, high fidelity and high-priced fun that is the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) show.

Once again, the big installers and technicians show is being held in Denver, Colo. And once again it's expected to bring nearly 50,000 attendees and exhibitors for the better part of a week; filling out the Colorado Convention Center with education programs, networking events and booth presentations. »

    NBC-Universal did a pretty good job covering the 2008 Olympics … at least from my shifting vantage points.
    The best picture was on my hi-def set (40” Bravia) connected to DIRECTV.  Second best picture was on my older 52” Sony connected to Comast.
    Smallest picture – but by far best experience – was in the seats at the Water Cube, Bird’s Nest and National Indoor Stadium. »

With apologies to Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds ... "It's getting strange in here."

Back from Beijing, with brain cells bouncing like a dropped baton (oh, ouch), a whole lot of what everyone "knew" when I left has been turned on its head.

Just for starters there's the "Beijing as NBCU's last GE-gasp" bit of conventional wisdom.  When I left all the smarties on the Street and in the blogs where CERTAIN ... make that DOUBLE CERTAIN ... that the big electric/equipment/etc co would shed the Peacock shortly after the closing ceremony.   But now with ratings' gold and ad dollars (some $1.3billion and counting and no make-goods)  piling up, the Peacock is looking more like the goose of golden egg fame and the smarties are saying that only a fool would sell.  (Like big companies have never been known to do foolish things ... but, hey, last seen Jeff Zucker was practically dancing in the Beijing St. Regis elevator.) »

Kable Kid: Back to CMT!

I got a press release last week from CMT about "Gone Country" and "Outsiders Inn." One of my first interviews for this column was with Bob Kusbit (whom I blame for getting me to actually listen to Hannah Montana - and like it).   I interviewed him back in January about "Gone Country," which turned out to be one amazing hit!  I am happy to say I really enjoyed learning about it... So when I saw that there was going to be a second season of the show, and it had a spin-off, I had to get in touch with CMT.    Which was exactly what I did.  

This time I interviewed Claire McCabe, vice president original programming and series development. Talk about a smart person! Within the first seconds of talking to her, I was laughing. She has the type of personality that puts people at ease.  I love doing interviews, but they can be a little bit scary! Talking to Claire felt like talking to someone I know. »
