FCC Rebuffs EchoStar
The FCC has turned down a satellite application from EchoStar citing "an established pattern of missing satellite implementation milestones." That pattern, says the commission in a memorandum released yesterday, shows "speculative activity" which effectively bars the company from filing applications for new satellites.
The prohibition can be lifted, says the FCC, once EchoStar no longer has "two or more pending satellite applications or two or more licensed and unbuilt satellites." Currently, the company has five authorized but unbuilt satellites.
The rejected application was for a C-band satellite at the 84.9ºW orbital location.
An EchoStar spokesperson noted that the company had just received the FCC notice and is evaluating its response.•
